How to Cut Vinyl With a Cricut

Cutting vinyl goes wrong in predictable places: the blade goes too deep, the mat is too sticky, or the design has details too small to weed. Get those three right and the rest is repetition.

Before you load anything

1. 01Upload your SVG and size it to the finished object, not to the mat. Measure the shirt or tumbler first.
2. 02Check the smallest element. Anything under 1/8 inch wide will fight you at the weeding stage.
3. 03Mirror the design if you are cutting heat transfer vinyl. Do not mirror adhesive vinyl.
4. 04Choose the exact material preset — 'Premium Vinyl' and 'Everyday Iron-On' cut at different depths.

Mat and blade

• —Adhesive vinyl: green StandardGrip mat, fine-point blade.
• —Heat transfer vinyl: green StandardGrip mat, fine-point blade, shiny carrier side down.
• —Cardstock: blue LightGrip mat to avoid tearing on removal.
• —Glitter HTV: bump pressure one step up — the glitter layer resists the blade.

A new mat is often too sticky. Press it once on a clean cotton shirt to knock the tack back, or the vinyl will stretch when you peel it.

Always test cut

Move the design into a corner of the sheet and run a small square first. The vinyl should separate cleanly while the paper backing stays intact — if you can see cut lines on the backing, drop the pressure.

Weeding without tears

1. 01Work under a bright, angled light so the cut lines catch shadows.
2. 02Start at an outside corner and pull the excess back on itself at a shallow angle, not straight up.
3. 03Pick out counters — the middles of letters like A, O and R — before removing the large negative space.
4. 04For intricate designs, weed in sections and keep the removed scrap away from the sticky surface.

Transfer

Adhesive vinyl

Burnish transfer tape over the weeded design, peel the backing away at a sharp angle, position on a clean, dry surface, burnish again, then remove the tape slowly.

Heat transfer vinyl

Preheat the garment for a few seconds to drive off moisture, press at the temperature and time your HTV specifies, then follow the warm or cold peel instruction on the roll. Guessing the peel type is the most common reason a design lifts in the wash.

Which mat should I use for adhesive vinyl?

The green StandardGrip mat. Use the blue LightGrip only for paper, and the purple StrongGrip for thick materials like chipboard.

Do I mirror the design for heat transfer vinyl?

Yes. HTV is cut face down on the shiny carrier sheet, so the design must be mirrored or the text comes out backwards.

Why is my Cricut cutting through the backing?

Pressure is too high or the blade setting is wrong for the material. Drop to the lighter pressure option and run a small test cut before committing the sheet.
