SVG files for laser cutting and engraving

A laser reads the same vector artwork a blade does, but it asks a different question of every line: burn through it, score it, or fill it in. That is why a design that makes a perfect vinyl decal can drop into a pile of loose pieces on a Glowforge bed. The files here are clean, closed-path vectors with no duplicate outlines stacked on top of each other, so your laser software shows one operation per shape instead of firing the same cut twice.

Everything downloads free, with no account and no watermark. Bold, chunky artwork suits cut-through work in plywood and acrylic; detailed line work and script lettering are happiest as engraves on wood, slate, leather or anodized metal.

Setting up a file in laser software

Import the .svg into the Glowforge app, xTool Creative Space, LightBurn or your machine's own tool. Each closed path arrives as a separate step, and the job is deciding what each one does. Assign the outermost boundary to cut, anything internal you want to keep to engrave, and any decorative single line to score. Then order the operations so engraving happens before the cut — once a piece is free of the sheet it can shift, and a late engrave lands off-register.

Run a small test tile on the same material before committing a full sheet. Wood varies batch to batch: two sheets of 3mm birch from the same supplier can differ enough that the settings which cut cleanly on one leave the other attached at the corners. Keep a note of speed, power and passes per material and you will stop re-deriving them every project.

For interlocking boxes, inlays or press-fit pieces, offset paths inward by roughly half your kerf so parts seat tightly. For signs, ornaments and gifts it makes no visible difference and you can skip the step entirely.

Designs that laser well

Monograms, house numbers, quotes with heavy strokes and silhouette-style animals all cut through cleanly because the shapes are broad and connected. Mandalas, floral line work and anything with hairline detail belong in an engrave layer, where the detail becomes an asset rather than a structural weak point.

Watch for enclosed counters — the middle of an O, the hole in an A. On a cut-through job those centers drop out. Either engrave the lettering instead, or choose a stencil-style design where the counters are bridged back to the surrounding frame.

Can you use SVG files for laser cutting?
Yes — SVG is the standard vector format for laser software. Glowforge, xTool Creative Space, LightBurn and LaserGRBL all import SVG and read every path as a vector operation you can set to cut, score or engrave.
What is the difference between a laser file and a Cricut file?
The artwork is the same; the intent differs. A cutting machine follows every closed path with a blade, while a laser needs you to decide per path whether it cuts through, scores a line, or engraves a filled area. Designs with fine internal detail engrave beautifully but may fall apart if you set them all to cut.
Do these free SVG files work with Glowforge?
They do. Upload the .svg in the Glowforge app and each shape appears as its own step, so you can set the outer boundary to cut and inner details to engrave. Sizes carry over from the file, so check the dimensions against your material before printing.
Why did my laser cut the design into pieces?
Every path was set to cut, including the internal detail that was meant to be engraved. Set only the outermost path to cut and switch inner shapes to engrave or score, or pick a stencil-style design where the details are bridged to the frame.
What is kerf and do I need to adjust for it?
Kerf is the width of material the beam burns away, usually a fraction of a millimeter. It matters for interlocking or inlay pieces, where you offset paths inward by half the kerf so parts fit snugly. For signs, ornaments and engraved gifts you can ignore it.
Which materials suit these designs?
Baltic birch ply and basswood for ornaments and signs, acrylic for keyrings and cake toppers, leather and cork for coasters, and slate or anodized aluminum for engrave-only work. Never laser PVC or vinyl — it releases chlorine gas and corrodes the machine.
