SVG vs PNG vs DXF

Most download bundles hand you all three. Here is what each one is for, so you stop guessing at the point of import.

The short version: cut with SVG, print with PNG, and keep DXF for Silhouette Studio Basic. The longer version explains why, and where each format quietly fails.

SVG — the cut file

A vector file describing paths, not pixels. Your machine follows those paths exactly, at any size, with no loss of detail. It also carries fill colors, which is how a layered design arrives already separated into cuttable pieces.

Best for: vinyl, cardstock, HTV, iron-on, paper crafts.
Opens in: Cricut Design Space, Silhouette Studio Designer Edition, Inkscape, Illustrator.
Weakness: not a photo format — no gradients or textures in most cut files.

PNG — the print file

Pixels with transparency. Ideal anywhere the design is printed rather than cut: print-then-cut stickers, sublimation, heat transfer paper, mugs and mockups.

Best for: sublimation, print-then-cut, digital use and previews.
Aim for 300 DPI at final size — a 1000px PNG on a 12 inch shirt looks soft.
Weakness: scaling up blurs, and cutting requires a traced outline.

DXF — the fallback cut file

A CAD format that stores outlines only. It exists in craft bundles for one reason: Silhouette Studio Basic Edition refuses SVG unless you upgrade.

Best for: Silhouette Studio Basic Edition users.
Everything cuts correctly, but layers arrive without color, so keep the preview image open.
Weakness: no fills, no grouping, occasionally odd scaling on import.
